FAT & SATURATED FAT
Fat plays an essential role in a healthy diet.
We've brought together the science, the nutrition data and the comparisons without the confusion. It's 100% plant based. 100% fact based.
HOW THIS™ STACKS UP ON SATURATED FAT
Here's how THIS™ compares with meat using transparent nutrition data.
Got Questions About Fat? We’ve Got Answers
What is saturated/unsaturated fat
Fat is an important part of a healthy diet and getting the right balance of different fats in your diet will help keep your blood cholesterol level, weight, and heart healthy. Saturated fat is a type of fat that’s usually solid at room temperature and, when eaten in excess, can raise LDL (“bad”) cholesterol. Unsaturated fat is usually liquid at room temperature and, when swapped for saturated fat, can lead to better heart health.
The bottom line, it’s not about cutting fat completely, it’s about swapping to more of THIS™ good stuff.
SOURCEHow much fat do you think most adults need in a day?
About one third (no more than 35%) of the calories you eat should come from fat, according to recommendations from the UK’s Scientific Advisory Committee on Nutrition.
For women who are eating 2,000 calories per day and for men eating 2,500 calories per day, this is equivalent to a maximum:
- Women: 70g fat per day
- Men: 95g fat per day
What are your saturated fats needs ?
Less than 10% of the calories we eat should come from saturated fats. This is equivalent to a maximum of:
- Women: 20g saturated fat per day
- Men: 30g saturated fat per day
If you already have heart disease or are at high risk of heart disease, you may need to eat less saturated fat than this. Did you know that THIS™ sausages have 83% less saturated fats than regular meat sausages?
SOURCEWhy is too much saturated fat bad?
Saturated fat is considered unhealthy because it can raise LDL (“bad”) cholesterol in the blood. Over time, this can build up in artery walls and increase the risk of heart disease and stroke.
High intakes of saturated fat, commonly found in red meat, butter and cheese, can also reduce the liver’s ability to remove LDL cholesterol, leading to higher levels in the body.
SOURCEHOW CAN THIS™ HELP
Plant-based foods tend to be lower in saturated fat and higher in unsaturated fats, which can help support healthier cholesterol levels when they replace animal-based saturated fats.
Fats that are solid at room temperature, such as the white fat on a steak or the rind of bacon, are generally higher in saturated fat. Fats that are liquid at room temperature, such as olive oil, are generally lower in saturated fat. Swapping to plant-based meats that are lower in saturated fat can help reduce LDL (“bad”) cholesterol, support heart health, and contribute to a more balanced fat intake overall.
Can plant-based diets help heart health?
Yes. Well‑planned plant‑based diets are linked to better heart health because they’re typically lower in saturated fat and higher in fibre, unsaturated fats, and plant nutrients.
These factors can help lower cholesterol and support healthy blood vessels, especially when plant foods replace animal fats.
SOURCEHOW THIS™ CAN HELP:
THIS™products are built with heart health in mind. They are 100% plant-based and typically lower in saturated fat and higher in plant-based nutrients and fibre compared to many animal-based alternatives.
So when plant-based foods like THIS™ replace higher saturated fat animal products, they can help support a more balanced fat intake in the diet."
What is cholesterol?
Everyone has cholesterol. It’s a fatty substance in your blood that’s produced naturally by your liver and it's needed for healthy cells. Some foods such as meat, contain cholesterol, known as dietary cholesterol. Some foods contain cholesterol as well, but for most people, what you eat has only a small effect on blood cholesterol. The bigger influences are usually saturated fat, overall diet and genetics. Plant based meats do not contain any dietary cholesterol. Your body will thank you for THIS™.
SOURCEWhy do some people need to lower their cholesterol? is it bad? What's the consequence of high cholesterol?
There are two types of cholestrol HDL ("good" cholesterol) and LDL (“bad” cholesterol). When LDL levels are high, cholesterol can stick to artery walls and form plaque (a process called atherosclerosis).
Over time, this causes arteries to narrow and harden, reducing blood flow to vital organs.
High cholesterol significantly raises the risk of heart disease, heart attacks and strokes.
Eating too much sat fat can raise LDL levels, so staying within the recommended limits supports heart health.
SOURCEDoes THIS™ contain cholesterol?
No. Simple as that.
Are plant-based foods lower in saturated fat than meat?
Yes. Many THIS™ products are generally low in saturated fat, while some meats like beef tend to be high in saturated fat. While many animal-based meats are higher in saturated fat, plant-based meats are often lower in saturated fat. That said, there is variation between products, so it’s always worth checking the nutrition label.
To make this easier, we’ve put the facts in charts so you can quickly see how different products stack up.
What does “low in saturated fat” mean?
"Low in saturated fat" is a claim regulated by UK law. A claim that a food is low in saturated fat may only be made if the total saturated fatty acids in the product do not exceed 1.5g per 100g for solids or 0.75g per 100 ml for liquids, and the amount of saturated fatty acids must not provide more than 10% of the total energy.
